Young Knee Cool is pleased to present I shit you not, the first solo exhibition by Hiroshi Tachibana.

Tachibana maintains an uncontrollable, unstable state by painting on slippery plastic sheets, then layering and transferring the painted surface onto the canvas rather than working on it directly. This deliberate detour avoids the typical gestures of painting and makes the process uniquely his own.

In daily life, the influences we absorb—conversations, news, fleeting scenes—quietly shape our emotional responses and collective unconscious. These forces, though beyond words, form unpredictable patterns of behavior. We move through the world believing we are making independent choices, when in fact our actions may already be guided by something else.

Tachibana said, “Through engaging with my work, I hope to unsettle the unconscious rules of perception shaped by society and offer a moment to reclaim sensations that emerge before language.”

Tachibana’s paintings delicately surface these subtle dissonances. Shapes and colors overlap in ways that appear accidental, yet are carefully orchestrated, capturing a tension between control and chaos, intention and spontaneity. His works reflect the ever-shifting textures of the world—fresh, fragile, and attuned to its quiet, elusive beauty.
