Young Knee Cool is pleased to present “(泡) PÀO, PEACH, SPILIT HORSES” a solo exhibition by Yoshie Sugito. Sugito continues her artistic work, which deals with stories and oral traditions and finds expression in multimedia drawings, ceramics and installations. Sugito is inspired by everyday experiences and actions which, through social interactions and constant repetition, enable the retelling and updating of stories as well as generating new forms and images. With 泡菜壇 (“pào cài tán” pickle jar), the name of traditional Chinese pickle pots and also the title of the installation, Sugito has dealt with those old traditional objects, which like 泡菜 (“pào cài” pickled vegetable), originates from China. The attraction for the artist comes in creating archives of personal histories in different cultures through fermented foods from traditional, family and individual recipes. She is also interested in making experiences for others by spending time with such objects in their own private spaces. During the exhibition, the visitors are invited to take a pickle jar home and become a part of this ongoing art project. A painting will take the place of any pot which has been taken to a participant’s home and so images gradually appear over time. This interaction makes it possible to create transformative landscapes, new images and new narratives.
Yoshie Sugito lives and works in Berlin and New York. She studied at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunschweig and at the Musashino Art University Tokyo. Sugito received a grant from the Agency for Cultural Affairs, Government of Japan for an extended residency in New York City (2021-2023). She participated in the Open Atelier in the Japanischen Palais von Staatlichen Kunstsammlungen Dresden (2020) and the Artist Residency by the NARS Foundation (2021). Recent shows include Hibernationstation, Klosterruine Berlin (Berlin, 2021), Routes/Roots, Tokyo Arts and Space (Tokyo, 2021) Night Wander, Coffee Reading, Kunstquartier Bethanien (Berlin, 2019), the Storytellers, terrail (2019, Vallauris) / Glas Herz Fenster, Il Caminetto (Hamburg, 2018)
